Rock Out with Your Bock Out

That's right kids, the time has finally arrived - Bockfest 2010 is upon us! Rejoice and celebrate and drink lots of beer! The parade kicks off tonight from Arnold's at 5:30 and will arrive down Main St. around 6:00. Be there to witness the visual delights. :D Check out Bockfest's website for the full details, but I know I'll be there and am especially looking forward to the Sausage Queen (or Wiener Princess, as my Chicago friends so fondly refer to it) Saturday night! I'll also be signing and selling copies of Cincinnati's Brewing History Saturday at Bockfest Hall from 12-4. Hope to see you there!

P.S. - If you didn't hear me on the Mike McConnell show this morning at 10:30 on 700 WLW, click here to download the podcast and listen.

Today's the Day!

As of today, Cincinnati's Brewing History is officially on the market! Purchase your copy online, or come on down and see me at one of the book signing events below:
  • Saturday March 6, Bockfest Hall (www.bockfest.com for directions): 12-4
  • Saturday March 13, Borders on Colerain Ave.: 1:30-3:30
  • Saturday March 20, 34th Annual "Luck O' the Irish" Mini Canvention & Breweriana Show, Holiday Inn Mineola Pike (Erlanger, KY): 11-1
  • Sunday March 28, Barnes & Noble in Florence, KY: 2-4
  • Saturday April 3, Barnes & Noble at Newport on the Levee: 2-4
This has been a truly fascinating experience that has forever altered the way I perceive my hometown. I've personally learned so much about Cincinnati's rich historical legacy and am enthusiastic about what's to come!

This book has only come to fruition due to the extremely generous assistance of many individuals who care very deeply about the subject and about the city of Cincinnati. Local historians, collectors, beer enthusiasts and others have donated their time, their knowledge, their resources and their personal collections to make this book happen and I'm very grateful to have met every one of them.

In the short term, my hope is that readers like you will purchase this book as a brief introduction to (or summary of) the topic. A little something to whet your knowledge-seeking appetite, if you will (and believe me, this book will make you thirsty). In the long term, however, it's my hope and desire that this and other books, articles, videos, tours, associations, etc., on a broad variety of topics (coupled with a wealth of historically significant architecture) will all help to cultivate a thriving heritage tourism industry focused in Over-the-Rhine.

So these are my thoughts upon the publication of my very first book! I hope you enjoy!

P.S.: Check out this article from this weekend's Enquirer.

P.P.S.: I do have a quick correction to point out. One of the first images talks about Moerlein's vivacious son Charles. Not sure what planet my brain was on there (perhaps thinking ahead to George and Charles Wiedemann? Who knows.), but the son's name is actually George. Exactly why it's SO difficult to hand in that "final" copy when you're a writer, but c'est la vie!

Get the VIP Treatment, Brewery District-style

For those who a.) can't wait for the upcoming Prohibition Resistance Tour, or b.) are looking for more beer, food, and information to accompany their visit to some of Cincinnati's most historic breweries, the Brewery District has a little something that should definitely pique your interest. They're now offering a special VIP tour on Tuesday, February 16th. You can be the first to see some recently discovered and excavated tunnels and lagering cellars beneath the streets of OTR - which have never before been open to the public! After being guided above and below the breweries, tour-takers are whisked away to Arnold's for a 5-course wild game dinner where each course is paired with a different beer. And if food and beer alone isn't reason enough for you to book immediately, you'll also be regaled with a series of guest speakers sure to inform and entertain.

For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit the Brewery District's website.

Brewin' in the New Year!

First and foremost, I'd like to wish all two of you that still follow this blog (thanks mom and self ;) a happy new year! What's my resolution, you ask? Perhaps for starters I could try updating Brewtiful Cincy more than, say, once every three months? A daunting task, but I think I'm up for it...

So. In terms of this town's brewing heritage, 2010 has kicked off to a tumultuous start. Would you like the good news or bad news first? I always like to get the bad out of the way, so let's just start there. Several weekends ago the old Christian Moerlein barrel house was devastated by a 4-alarm fire.

It was a dramatic, heartbreaking scene, however, all may not be lost. There's currently hope that the building can be saved. http://www.fox19.com/Global/story.asp?S=11805830

On a more positive note, it looks like we've got a new brewery on the block! Rivertown Brewery, headed up by Jason Roeper and Randy Schlitz - members of the Bloatarian Brewing League, have opened their microbrewery in Lockland. Their scheduled release date is the Cincy Beerfest (Jan. 30th) and you can expect to see their products up on the shelves in early February. Congratulations!

And finally, Bockfest and the Prohibition Resistance Tour are both on the horizon, so mark your calendars for the weekend of March 5-7! Tickets are actually on sale for the tour already, so get 'em while they last! This event is known to sell out. The Brewery District CURC is working on a great lineup this year, including stops at the Clyffside, Kauffman and Crown Breweries. Click here for more info and to purchase tickets.

Oh, I guess there's one more thing... "Cincinnati's Brewing History" will be released the first week of March! Stay tuned for more details...
